Social psychologist Amy Cuddy’s pioneering research shows that subtle manipulations in posture can actually change our hormone levels and dramatically alter the way we feel and are perceived by the people around us. Just two minutes in one of Cuddy’s power poses lowered cortisol levels and actually changed the performance of research participants in stressful situations. She channeled these findings into empowerment training tips. Titles specialize employees, and put them in a little plot where they’re allowed to work. Specialization sets employees against each other, carving out little kingdoms of responsibility. Anything outside their kingdom is beyond their purview, and anyone stepping within that kingdom is encroaching upon their pride and their job security.
Here’s the other problem with Facebook and Twitter and even The New York Times. When you expose yourself to those things, especially in the constant way that people do now—older people as well as younger people—you are continuously bombarding yourself with a stream of other people’s thoughts. You are marinating yourself in the conventional wisdom. In other people’s reality: for others, not for yourself. You are creating a cacophony in which it is impossible to hear your own voice, whether it’s yourself you’re thinking about or anything else.

The white zone is the mental space while working out when you are at complete exhaustion. Or at least you think you are. Your brain is screaming for you to stop. But the truth is your body can push longer. It’s your brain that taps out, hits the stop button. So the key is to get to this white zone as fast as you can, then stretch it. Stretching this is what will get you faster, stronger, accomplish things you never thought you could. This takes a certain mindset. Music can help. You can’t just be angry. You gotta turn your dial to agro. And leave it there like it’s broken.

When you sit down to write a poem, you really don’t know where you’re going. If you know where you’re going, the poem stinks, you probably already wrote it, and you’re imitating yourself. You have to follow where the poem leads. And it will surprise you. It will say things you didn’t expect to say. And you look at the poem and you realize, ‘That is truly what I felt.’ That is truly what I saw.

If ever there were a series of advertisements that better marketed traveling, I’m sure this series would put it to shame.
